FRANÇAIS

Dear High School and University Students!

We would like to invite you to participate at the next International Viola Congress to be held June 9-12, 1999 in Guelph, Ontario.

We have organized a special program just for you. You will be involved in a multiple viola performance for all the congress participants, will be able to participate in a master class on orchestral excerpts and of course you will be encouraged to attend all the activities, concerts and lectures given at the Congress. Those selected will also be invited to the honorary banquet.

As the number of students must be limited, we will choose the participants by a tape audition.

There are 3 categories:

1) multiple viola playing ages 15-18
2) multiple viola playing ages 18-23
3) orchestral excerpts ages 18-23

Entrants for the multiple viola program (categories 1 and 2) should prepare a tape not longer than 10 minutes with following contents:

- 1 major 3-octave scale of your choice
- 1 minor 3-octave scale of your choice
- 1 chromatic 3-octave scale
- 1 short piece or an excerpt of a longer one

We expect to perform the Gordon Jacob viola octet (cat.1) and the Benjamin Dale viola sextet (cat.2) and other short multiple viola chamber music works.

Students who are interested in the masterclass should audition with the same tape contents plus one excerpt of their choice from the following list:

  1. Berlioz: Roman Carnival overture
    3rd measure of #1 through #3
  2. Mozart : 35th Symph., Haffner, last mvt.
    10 measures after D to E (m.134-181)
  3. Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Nights’ Dream
    letter B through D (m 49-93)
  4. Strauss: Don Juan
    first 1 1/2 pages (opening to D)

Besides this unique opportunity to play with other young enthusiastic violists, besides meeting the Primrose competition participants and making new friends, the congress will offer you:

- student rates for the congress participation ($150 Cdn for members, $180 cdn for non-members)
- student housing rates ($32 Cdn / night, breakfast included)
- an invitation to the banquet - FREE for the winners.

You are responsible for your own transportation.

If you are interested in participating, please send your tape by March 27th 1999 to:
